Not feeling accurately represented, reflected or even understood, clients in the BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and other minoritized groups seek treatment at a far lesser rate than White Americans struggling with substance use disorder.
Recognizing and addressing the profound impact of race issues, systemic deficits, and discriminatory policies on our BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other minoritized clients is pivotal in shaping how we serve, represent, and foster a safe space for them.
Join us to learn how to:
- Evaluate your program, agency and staff for processes related to cultural competency
- Assess the cultural needs of clients and assist them in becoming their own advocate in the future
- Utilize appropriate interventions for staff and agency to be culturally competent
By actively cultivating cultural competence, we not only create opportunities for these groups to access the care they deserve and need but also establish an environment free of judgment, enabling them to enhance their lives and fundamentally transform the course of substance use treatment.
Madison Hamm, LCSW
Madison Hamm, LCSW, has been practicing full time social work since 2018. Following the completion of her MSW, Madison began working in the field of mental health and substance use treatment. Through working at a PHP and IOP that incorporates experiential therapy and nature immersion on the group and individual levels of care in order to expand the client’s ability to independently regulate their emotions and increase distress tolerance in a way that decreases likelihood and susceptibility to relapse following treatment. In her work at Omega Recovery, Madison has been using somatic, nature immersion and experiential therapy interventions, and have seen relapse rates decrease, and increase client satisfaction and engagement in the program. This is a way to use trauma-informed care and approaches to clients by increasing client choice and safety of expression, while maintaining an understanding of consistent SUD’s consequence on the brain and nervous system.
