Sandra Barrett, LCSW-C
Ms. Barrett is a clinical social worker with more than 45 years’ experience. She has a private practice in the DC metropolitan area. In the civilian sector, she has worked in a variety of areas as a social worker holding positions as Program Manager, coordinator, and supervisor; in various sectors to include child welfare, prison systems running Vietnam support groups, VA Hospitals, Family Advocacy (Domestic Violence) for the Air Force and the Navy, and military mental health clinics. She was the clinical director for a Vietnam outreach center in the early 80’s. Ms. Barrett has also taught Social Work at Coppin State College for several years. She has presented at the national meeting of Vietnam Vets Outreach Centers, and the National Association of Black Social Workers. She has developed workshops for CEUs and created mandatory programs for Race and Discrimination for the VA in Maine. She has served on the Alumni Board at Boston University School of Social Work, and the Urban League of RI.
She has been involved with the military for most of her adult life. Prior to attending college, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served 5 and a half years during the Viet Nam Era. She later returned to the U.S. Air Force Reserves and the Rhode Island Air National Guard where she was commissioned as a Captain. After 26 years of total service, she retired as a Major in 1995. During her years in the military, she was a Communications Center Supervisor, Military Training Instructor, Chief of Social Actions, Commander of a Communications Flight, and an Aircraft Maintenance Officer. She is currently a Military Family Life Counselor and facilitates nationwide with Veterans returning from deployments
Ms. Barrett helped to develop the Military Ministry and served as the Director at Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA. for more than 10 years. She holds a BA Degree from Roger Williams University, a master’s from Boston University School of Social Work, and a master’s in counseling education from Rhode Island College. She is now in the process of completing a doctorate in Leadership in Higher Education.
