Corey Pitts, LCMHC, is a mental health therapist and clinical supervisor working in private practice. Corey has been a therapist for close to ten years and is an adjunct instructor with the Division of Mental Health Counseling at The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment and management of co-occurring disorders such as trauma, anxiety/depression, substance use, as well as aspects of various mood and personality disorders. He uses Dialectical Behavior Therapy and has several years of experience implementing it in a wide array of treatment settings including community outreach models as well as Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in a rural community that was once fifth in the nation for opioid-related overdoses. Corey also holds tenure in providing DBT within co-morbid hospital-based intensive outpatient (IOP) settings (primarily substance use disorders/borderline personality disorder) holding both skills-based DBT groups and individual DBT therapy interventions. Corey is known for a teaching style that makes vague concepts seem simple to grasp and use.

Session One Course Description:

During session one, we will discuss the development of the NCE, its purpose and content, as well as how knowledge base of domains can further prepare you for real-world clinical practice as a future mental health clinician.

• Introduction to the NCE
• History of NCE development
• Purpose and content of the NCE
• Focuses and target populations for the NCE
• Minimally qualified candidacy
• Overview of all of the domain areas of the NCE
• Exam format
• Scoring
• Introduction to Human Growth and Development

Session Two Course Description:

During session two, we will discuss a handful of domains relevant to the NCE. These domains will be introduced and discussed via test example questions, rationales, as well as discussion surrounding review of these domain areas:

• Introduction to Social and Cultural Diversity
• Intro to Counseling and Helping Relationships
• Intro to Group Counseling & Group Work

Session Three Course Description:

During session three, we will discuss and introduce more domains relevant to the NCE. These domains will be introduced and discussed via test example questions, rationales, as well as discussion surrounding review of these domain areas:

• Introduction to Career Development
• Introduction to Assessment & Testing
• Introduction to Research & Program Evaluation
• Introduction to Professional Orientation & Ethical Practice

Session Four Course Description:

During session four, we will finalize our discussion points with review of relevant course content, while also introducing some final key areas of review. We will also ensure important topics for test readiness are reviewed and discussed to ensure your preparedness for the NCE.

• Final overview of course contents including discussion of relevant points in course objectives, while also reviewing test etiquette
• Completion of a mock test
