Corey Pitts, LCMHC, is a mental health therapist and clinical supervisor working in private practice. Corey has been a therapist for close to ten years and is an adjunct instructor with the Division of Mental Health Counseling at The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He specializes in the treatment and management of co-occurring disorders such as trauma, anxiety/depression, substance use, as well as aspects of various mood and personality disorders. He uses Dialectical Behavior Therapy and has several years of experience implementing it in a wide array of treatment settings including community outreach models as well as Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in a rural community that was once fifth in the nation for opioid-related overdoses. Corey also holds tenure in providing DBT within co-morbid hospital-based intensive outpatient (IOP) settings (primarily substance use disorders/borderline personality disorder) holding both skills-based DBT groups and individual DBT therapy interventions. Corey is known for a teaching style that makes vague concepts seem simple to grasp and use.

Session One: Overview, Exam Format, Scoring and More
During session one, we will discuss the development of the NCMHCE, its purpose and content, as well as how case conceptualizations can further prepare you for real-world clinical practice as a future mental health clinician.

Session Two: Counseling Skills, Assessment Skills and Applying Interventions
During session two, we will discuss and practice counseling skills and interventions through a combination of psych-ed and application via case studies. This will also include discussion regarding general assessment skills required to be a proficient mental health clinician.
Session Objectives:
Session Three: Treatment Planning, Professional Practice and Ethics
During session three, we will introduce, discuss, as well as practice proper treatment planning, and how skills of assessment and diagnosis can assist with proper treatment planning. We will also review and discuss professional practice and ethics as a mental health clinician.

Session Four: Core Counseling Attributes, Examples and Test Practice
During session four, we will finalize our discussion with review of prior course contents, as well as introduction to core counseling attributes. We will also spend a majority of time on mock examples and test practice as a class.
